This week we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week. This is a perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had so far as a Paralegal Apprentice at Brethertons. I’m Georgia Eaton, and I am currently enrolled in the Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship at CILEX Law School. It’s been an exciting and rewarding journey since I joined the firm in September 2022. Starting as a Legal Assistant in the Property Management Department, I was fortunate enough to transition into the Property Litigation team, where I was presented with the opportunity to gain my legal qualifications through the CILEX Paralegal Apprenticeship.

What does a typical day look like as a Paralegal Apprentice?

Working in Litigation often presents new challenges and obstacles, as the work is so varied. No two days are the same in the Property Litigation team and that’s what makes it so interesting. In my role, I assist with day-to-day case management of active matters, which involves everything from conducting legal research and communicating with clients to drafting legal documents. Whether I am reviewing case files or carrying out the preparatory tasks ahead of any hearings, there’s always something new to get involved with, which makes the role both engaging and intriguing.

What’s my favourite thing about working at Brethertons?

One of the things I love most about Brethertons is the career development opportunities as the firm genuinely invests in its people, which is so important to me as I work towards becoming a qualified lawyer. I also enjoy being part of a team that not only specialises in complex leasehold property disputes but, also fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to play to their strengths. The people and the overall culture of the firm is what makes Brethertons stand out.

How do Brethertons support my qualification?

Brethertons have been incredibly supportive throughout my apprenticeship so far. CILEX Law School, my Apprenticeship provider, works closely with my line manager to ensure I’m gaining the practical skills required to become a competent Lawyer while balancing my studies. I currently have one study day a week, which allows me to dedicate time to focus solely on the theoretical knowledge necessary for my qualification. The structure of the apprenticeship enables me to apply what I learn in my studies directly to the work I do within my day-to-day role, reinforcing the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship as opposed to the traditional routes to qualification.

What do I find most rewarding in my role?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing a project come together. Every part of the team plays an important role in ensuring smooth case progression, and it’s satisfying to be a part of that. I also enjoy the challenges that come with working in Litigation, as they allow me to learn new skills that I can apply to future inquires. Since becoming a Paralegal Apprentice, I have developed a deeper understanding of the files I work on, which has led to an increase in my confidence and independence within my role. This enables me to effectively support my team whilst being involved in the progression of complex, litigated cases.
