This week we celebrate National Apprenticeship week by highlighting the stories of some of the apprentices who have started their careers at Brethertons and the different paths they have chosen following completion of their qualifications. We are proud of the investment we make into those starting their careers, and the support we provide to them and all employees in their roles at Brethertons from apprenticeships through to Partnership and Senior Management.
Sophie Gregory is an Apprentice and Office Assistant at Brethertons. She is currently studying towards her NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration. Here she talks about her experience as an Apprentice at Brethertons, and advice she would offer to anyone considering an Apprenticeship route in their career.
1. What made you decide on the Apprenticeship route?
I decided to apply for an apprenticeship here at Brethertons as I wanted a new challenge as well as to further my education without the need to go to university. I liked the idea of being able to work and gain the skills needed to fulfil my role effectively which, would also support the qualification that I’m working towards.
2. Why Brethertons?
I chose Brethertons as I liked that I could join as an apprentice but, not be limited to the role that I am currently in for the future. There is plenty of opportunity to progress within the company, whether that be through becoming a trainee solicitor or providing legal support within a specific department.
3. What have you found to be the advantages of studying and working at the same time?
Being able to study and work at the same time allows me to develop my knowledge in specific areas almost instantly. Every task that I complete as part of my job role in Office Services can provide evidence for my coursework in order to show that I am meeting the requirements of the apprenticeship. I can be set objectives that contribute towards supporting the company as well as my apprenticeship role.
4. What do you find challenging about being an Apprentice?
Sometimes making time for coursework in the office can be difficult as most days are quite busy.
5. What is your favourite moment of your Apprenticeship so far?
In general, being acknowledged for working hard and supporting colleagues is something that happens regularly here.
6. What support is provided to you in your role?
I have frequent meetings with my apprenticeship assessor to make sure that I am keeping on top of coursework as well as the tasks I have been assigned as part of my job role. I also have support from my Line Manager and Head of Practice Area if there is an area of my job that I am unsure of how to complete properly.
7. Would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone else?
I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship if you enjoy working independently and want to be in education but would still like to be able to work and earn money.
8. Do you have any advice for anyone considering this route?
My advice would be to work hard and show that you are willing to learn in order to get the best out of your role. It is also important to get involved in supporting where you can in order to create positive relationships with all of your colleagues.
9. Where do you see your career going after you finish your apprenticeship?
I would hopefully like to be able to stay on at Brethertons to complete level 3 of my NVQ in Business Administration.
