Emma Morris is an Associate (Management Development) in our Residential Conveyancing team. We caught up with her to get an insight into her role and her time at Brethertons.
1. What are the key priorities in your role?
As an Associate (MD) in the Residential Conveyancing team, my priorities are split between managing the Rugby conveyancing team and providing legal support to the Lawyers and Executive Lawyers within it.
2. What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I most enjoy the opportunity to work with a great team to support and help them to achieve both their goals and Brethertons’ goals. It gives me great pleasure to work with them on a daily basis overcoming the challenges that frequently occur in a conveyancing environment and pushing myself to do my best every day.
3. What aspects of your role challenge you?
I am relatively new to the Associate MD role and as such I am learning a huge amount every day. I have previously worked in a supervisory capacity from a legal perspective but have not before been formally responsible for managing people. This is a great new opportunity for me to learn and develop as both a Lawyer and a manager.
4. What aspects of your work do you find most interesting?
As an Associate MD, I deal with some of the more technical and challenging areas of conveyancing such as Equity Release Schemes and Reconstitution of Titles. These always provide a fresh challenge but, I have always been very passionate about learning new areas and trying to broaden my skillset.
5. What support do you have in the firm and in your team?
I work alongside an Associate TS (Technical Specialist). She helps to support the team with technical issues and complex legal matters. I also work closely with the Head of Practice Area, Tom Ansell, who is always on hand to offer help and support with any matters which the team require.
6. How have you developed in your role since you started in it?
Having only been in the role for 6 months, I am still developing on a daily basis. The role enables me to focus on my management responsibilities and I feel it is these skills that have grown the most since I began the role. There will always be more to learn when managing people, as well as in law in general and so I am always seeking to improve.
7. Where do you see you career/skills/knowledge developing at Brethertons?
Due to the way that Brethertons is structured, there is always a clear line of sight up through the business. As such, I know that should I choose to progress any further in my career, then the opportunity would be available as long as I am demonstrating the rights skills and attitudes. Having recently settled into this role, I am currently enjoying getting my feet under the table!
8. What do you enjoy most about the firm and our structure?
I truly believe that if you put hard work in then you will be rewarded for it. Brethertons have a great performance review structure that really allows all employees to see exactly what they are working towards and what they need to do to achieve this. It is great to know how I am contributing to the business and just how I can benefit from its success.
9. If someone is considering applying for an Associate (MD) role at Brethertons is there anything you would like to share with them?
I would highly recommend both Brethertons and the role of Associate (MD). I have been given a great opportunity to progress within my career here with some truly fantastic and like-minded people around me. I really feel valued and am a proud Brethertonian!
