We are delighted to announce that we are holding an exciting event to celebrate the return of rugby to its home town. As part of the town’s Rugby World Cup festival, we are hosting a special, rugby-themed breakfast with famous names from the sport giving an insight into the game.
Themed ‘Rugby Does Rugby - How the Game has changed’ the breakfast will be held at The Rugby Football Club on Webb Ellis Road in town on Thursday 22 October from 7:15am, and features representatives who will share their stories and experiences, offering a true reflection on how the game has changed throughout the ages as well as taking part in an exclusive Q&A session.
Ex-England rugby legend David Duckham, combined grace & power to become one of England's finest wingers. He also famously captained Coventry in 1972-3 & 1973-4 (Centenary Year) Winners of the RFU National Knockout Cup (now called the Worthington Cup) in both seasons. Specialising in scoring tries from broken play, the Coventry winger made an instant impact on his international debut scoring a try against Ireland in 1969. He was capped 36 times for England but his genius was truly evident in the British Lions team with his record breaking six try display in a single match on the 1971 tour. In 1977 David was awarded the MBE for services to rugby. David will talk to guests about how he got into the sport, and his thoughts on how the game has changed since the height of his career.
Current England Under-21 and Northampton Saints player Tom Stephenson is often said to be one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from the Saints Academy in recent years, and has already had a considerable impact both at Franklin's Gardens and on the international stage. Playing a year above age for England Under-18s, Tom not only captained the side, but played a vital role in ensuring they returned home from the FIRA/AER tournament in Madrid as champions. A former Moulton College student, Tom has a blend of pace and power that has proved almost impossible to stop at junior level, while many well established seniors have fallen foul of his step at Aviva 'A' League level for the Wanderers. Even more established centres have found him a handful at senior level and his 13 senior appearances during the 2013/4 season, included not only stunning tries against Newcastle and Gloucester, but also the Aviva Premiership Final. Tom will give guests an insight into what it takes to become a top-ranked player in today’s modern game.
“The 2015 Rugby World Cup is possibly the biggest event that has involved and impacted on the town for many years”, said Shaun Jardine, CEO. “We have a long history of supporting the town in both community engagement and business events, and are extremely excited to be hosting a special, rugby themed event to support the town’s Rugby World Cup campaign.”
