Brethertons Solicitors LLP are delighted to announce their new Charity of Choice as Tommy’s; a charity that funds vital research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth so they can keep saving babies’ lives and support people through loss.
Brethertons staff were given the opportunity to put forward a charity that they felt Brethertons should support and fundraise for. Our Executive Committee then narrowed down the choices based on our overall company values and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principals. A final vote by our staff at the annual conference last week resulted in Tommy’s being chosen as our charity of choice.
The charity of the year selection comes as part of Brethertons wider CSR commitment to have a positive impact on the environment, community and people. At every annual staff conference we vote for a charity we would like to support and fundraise for and go with the majority vote.
Starting as a campaign in a spare cupboard in St. Thomas’ Hospital, Tommy’s is now the largest UK pregnancy charity working to make the UK the safest place in the world to give birth, supported by people who refuse to accept that a baby’s death, no matter what stage of pregnancy, is ‘just one of those things’. They campaign to effect legislative change in the way in which miscarriages are diagnosed, treated and prevented. They work with hospital trusts to ensure adequate training and resources are available to nurses, doctors and midwives and they help the everyday woman feel less lonely in the scariest of times.
An estimated 1 in 5 pregnancies ends in miscarriage and so often it is just classed as ‘one of those things’. The hardest thing is not being able to have an answer as to ‘why’ it happened and being the pregnant woman suffering the miscarriage physically, it is so easy to blame yourself. For something that is sadly so common it can end up being the loneliest feeling in the world with no one wanting or feeling like they can talk about it.
However, Tommy’s believe that every baby lost is one too many. Tommy’s exists to support, care for and champion people, no matter where they may be on their pregnancy journey. They act as a very warming ‘person’ to turn to when you are feeling so lost in this moment. Tommys wish is to ensure that no woman feels lonely in their experiences of baby loss or fertility issues. Not only do they support the women affected but also the people around them, their families and friends.
With the help of support and fundraising efforts, Tommy’s:
- Fund pioneering research to identify why pregnancy goes wrong which helps to understand how complications and loss can be prevented.
- Provide expert, midwife-led advice for parents before, during and after pregnancy
- Foster a connected, caring community, united in their goal to make pregnancy safer for all and supporting those who have lost babies.
