Brethertons is excited to support National Apprentice Week by celebrating the success of our own programme of Apprenticeships after winning a regional award in the field.
National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2015 will run from 9 to 13 March 2015. It is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
Law has, for generations, been seen as an attractive profession for many young people - it usually ranks along side Medicine and Accountancy as one of the top three! Traditionally, the route into law has been simple: gain a degree, complete the Legal Practice Course and then embark on the search for a training contract before being admitted as a solicitor. Straightforward - but in reality, tough and expensive.
Shaun Jardine, Brethertons’ CEO, who is having a celebratory lunch this week with the apprentices said: “It would be an understatement to say that Law is a competitive profession. It seems as though there are more and more law schools churning out potential solicitors, and less and less firms offering training contracts, which is why we are so excited about our apprenticeship programme.”
Shaun continues: “We have a number of apprentices in the firm, studying both law, and business administration. They’re all bright young people who have studied and passed their A levels.
All being well, they should finish their Apprenticeships and continue their studies to qualify as lawyers through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) or managers in due course, and then who knows – experienced lawyers, Associates, Head of Departments, Partners, or, as one of the apprentices at a recent presentation said, CEO of Brethertons!”
Brethertons is currently recruiting for a Litigation Apprentice to play a key role in the Property Management team at their Banbury office. This role will support the Debt Recovery teams with an efficient administration service whilst learning basic legal processes.
Jack Seager, a former apprentice and now Office Services Team Leader at Brethertons, said: “I started my apprenticeship at Brethertons because I could learn on the job. It’s good to be part of a team working on a variety of interesting projects and working with different people who can help me to build up my knowledge. It's the ideal next step in my career and the best decision I ever made. It has opened so many doors and I now work in a permanent position at Brethertons where I can continue to learn and develop.”
In 2014 Brethertons was named in the UK’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, one of only three Law Firms in the country. The firm was also recognised as a medium employer of the year at the regional finals of the National Apprenticeship Awards.
Brethertons’ Apprenticeship programme
Brethertons’ Apprenticeship programme has been running for 13 years, and to date, has engaged 41 apprentices. The programme has strengthened, grown and enhanced the firm’s Office Services function firm-wide. It has afforded flexibility with resource planning and deployment by means of training apprentices from “grass roots” to higher levels, enabling them to cover maternity and annual leave. Such cross-working experience not only empowers apprentices, but also reinforces administrative capabilities in order to meet in-house and external client demand.
